【could】【managed to】【was able to】
は、どれも「～できた」のような意味になり
どれを使ったらいいんだろう…？？と迷う時、ありますよね。
これらの3つの単語の違いを見てみましょう。
① could
<感覚動詞などの特定の動詞と一緒に>
● see, hear, taste, feel, smell, understand, remember, guess, recognize, notice…
例文
We could see the beautiful mountain from our hotel room.
(ホテルの部屋から美しい山が見えた。）
When I entered the room, I could smell something delicious.
（私は部屋に入った時、美味しい匂いがした（嗅げた）。）
The little boy could understand everything I said.
（その幼い男の子は私が言ったことをすべて理解できた。）
●General Ability 過去における能力
例文
She could read a novel when she was five.
（彼女は5歳の時に小説が読めた。）
I could run 10 km in under 30 minutes in the past.
（私は昔10キロを30分以下で走れた。）
●couldn`t 「～できた」の否定
例文
He couldn`t swim when he was young.
（彼は若い時、泳げなかった。）
I couldn`t find my smartphone this morning.
（私は今朝、スマホを見つけられなかった。）
She couldn`t catch the bus.
（彼女はバスの乗れなかった。）
I was so busy today that I couldn`t buy eggs.
（私は忙しくて卵を買えなかった。）

② managed to
（≒was able to）
●何かを成し遂げた、頑張ってできた。
●「能力」の話しではなく、ある状況で何かを達成した。
例文
They managed to escape from danger.
（彼らは、危険から逃れることができた。）
I managed to run 50 km.
（彼らは、50キロ走ることができた。）
We managed to find the lost dog.
（私達は、迷子犬を見つけることができた。）
③ was able to
（≒managed to）
●何かを成し遂げた、頑張ってできた。
●「能力」の話しではなく、ある状況で何かを達成した。
例文
They were able to escape from danger.
（彼らは、危険から逃れることができた。）
I was able to run 50 km.
（彼らは、危険から逃れることができた。）
I was able to find the dog.
（彼らは、危険から逃れることができた。）
